FAQs | Learning languages in Munich

There are two basic types of German courses offered, an intensive course during the day, and an evening course. The intensive course takes place every day Monday to Friday, from 9:30 to 13:00. The evening course takes place twice a week, either Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 18:30 to 21:00. Please see overview of different course types for a detailed description of each course. You can select the course which suits you best, depending on your schedule and learning objectives. We are also happy to advise you!

If you are not sure about your level, you can take a short 15 minute placement test, either online or in person in our office. This determines your level better, and we are able to offer a suitable course for you.

It is a term that describes the level of your current language ability. For example, if you have no knowledge of a language, or if you are a complete beginner, you are at level A1. That is also the first level you start to learn a new language.

Our German courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages levels. There are a total of 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Dialog Language School Munich divides these levels even further – each one into two parts (A1.1, A1.2, B1.1, B1.2 …). This way each level is more precise, and the participants are able to be placed in courses with the same level. To complete one whole level (e.g. A1) you need about 4 weeks in an intensive German course, depending on individual learning capabilities.

Yes, we do! You are welcome to take a trial lesson in our Evening German course or Intensive German course at any time – free of charge and without obligation. For individual training in German and English, you are free to decide whether this is the right course for you after you take the first lesson – that means if you choose not to book the course, you must pay only for that first lesson (2 hours/Teaching hour = 90 minutes), not for the whole course.

Yes, you can! If you notice that the course you are currently enrolled in is too difficult or too easy for you – you can change to another course, even if your current one is already in progress. Sometimes the placement test or your own estimation of your language level is not sufficient, and furthermore everyone learns differently. Therefore we offer the flexibility to change the courses. Please contact us in such case, we can arrange that for you.

In addition, you have a choice to combine the courses. For example, take on individual training in the afternoons after your intensive German course in the morning to maximize your results. This is especially effective if you require training in special areas or need technical terminology. Such arrangement is possible and easily booked, just ask us. Another possiblity is to change to another type of course, from an intensive day course to an evening one, in order to keep up with your altering schedule.

You are free to book language courses with us all year round. One teaching hour at Dialog Language school lasts 45 minutes, which is officially the duration of one lesson in Germany.

• German Intensive Course: weekdays from 9:30 to 13:00 (break from 11:00 to 11:30)

On German and Bavarian statutory holidays, classes in group courses are cancelled. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse these days or offer a replacement day.

We have no registration deadline for the German group courses. It is also possible to accept your enrolment on the day the course starts. Please note, however, that we can offer placement only if we have available space in the course. Our groups have 5 to 12 participants and this can fill up quickly. Especially during our high summer season in June, July, and August, our German courses are usually fully booked. To ensure a place in the course, we advise you to enrol four to six weeks in advance.

We can arrange individual training and company courses for you, usually within one week.

Note: If you need a language student visa for Germany, please allow at least 3 months for processing time. You should check for additional information with your consulate as well.

You can register for German and English courses using the easy to fill out online enrolment form on our website. After that you receive a confirmation email, followed by step by step information on how to proceed. If you have any questions or need additional support for enrolment, please contact us.

To confirm a placement in the selected course, please transfer a deposit of Euros 100.- to our bank account. The remaining course fee must be paid within 14 days prior to course start (with exception to certain cases arranged prior to arrival in Munich).

You can pay for your language course directly in our office by EC-card (no credit or debit card) by cash or by bank transfer.

All our language trainers are native or bilingual speakers with an academic backround. They have a Daf Certificate (German as a foreign language) and years of teaching experience. For Business German or Business English courses, our team of professionals offer special language skills and area of expertise in wide range of business and indurstry, as well as intercultural awareness. Some of our trainers even have work experience in certain professions, especially in the medical field.

Please bring a notebook and something to write with, pen or pencil. You could also bring a dictionary, a book, or any useful apps on your smartphone.

We work with a range of course books, each suitable for a different level. For beginner levels A1 and A2, the course book is “Linie 1“ and it costs about Euros 17,50. For levels B1 to C1 we use “Aspekte neu” and it costs about Euros 23. (as of Januara 2023). Additional materials such as copies of worksheets and other documents can be obtained from the office or your trainer and these are included in the course price.

We intentionally keep the classes small in order to give each participant enough attention and provide the best training opportunity. In both German Intensive and Evening courses there are usually between 4 and 7 participants. Only during our highly busy season in summer is the participation in the Intensive courses for children and teenagers higher, with between up o 14 participants per class.

Of course! If you have successfully completed your German course and reached a whole level (e.g. A1, B2, etc.), or even if have just participated in one of our courses, you will receive a certificate. You can use it for various purposes such as confirmation of your German language skills or other applications – or you can simply get it as part of your achievements.

Yes, you can take German telc exams and receive telc certificates at our language school. Alinguas Sprachschule München is the examination centre for all TELC examinations as well as telc Kompetenzzentrum Hochschule.. The school offers the most important exam certificates several times a year. You can find all dates on the Alinguas exam page.

Dialog Sprachschule München and Alinguas share an office and course rooms. Dialog’s offer is aimed more at companies and adults, Alinguas also offers courses for children and teenagers.

Our language school is located in Schwabing, a quiet but centrally located part of Munich. You only need about 15 minutes by public transport to reach our school from the city center or the main train station. We are right at the Hohenzollernplatz, which is a subway stop as well as the bus and tram stop. Please find all contact information, like exact directions how to reach us as well as our opening hours on our contact page.

The U2 underground and tram lines 12 and 27 take you directly to the language school; the Hohenzollernplatz stop is just a few steps away from the school.

It usually makes sense to get an IsarCard for your stay in Munich. This allows you to use all forms of public transportation. There are weekly and monthly tickets to choose from. The prices depend on where your accommodation is located. You can find information about the Isarcard on the MVG website.

If you are coming by car: There are no multi-storey car parks in the immediate vicinity of the language school, but there are parking facilities on the streets.

Our classrooms are located on the first floor of the language school. They are bright and spacious, with 2 large balconies which could be used for breaks. We have different sizes of rooms – smaller classrooms for a one-on-one training and mini-groups, and larger spaces used for group courses such as evening and intensive courses.

There are many cafes and bakeries, as well as couple of supermarkets including an Asian grocery store, butcher´s, deli, ice-cream parlour, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, and Italian restaurants, fresh produce stall, and other places to get food directly at Hohenzollernplatz. Most places offer inexpensive lunch packages or you can just buy your groceries and enjoy a little break.

In nice weather, you can sit on one of the many benches located all around the square, which is planted with many flowers and trees, and has a nice round fountain in the middle.

Officially, our language school does not organise leisure programs, but we can always provide you with ideas. However, Alinguas offers recreational programs for its summer courses. Please contact us if you are interested.

In urgent cases, you can send an mail to the language school and we will pass it on to the designated person. If necessary, you can also have us call you.

You do not need insurance to participate in the courses. However, we recommend that have health and liability insurance that is valid in Germany. In many cases, your own insurance also offers coverage abroad, but please ask your insurance company before. Further information can be found on the page Insurance for language students.

Munich is easily reachable by plane or train. The international airport Franz Josef Strauss is located in the north of Munich, and you can get into the city from the airport by subway, lines S-1 and S-8, which takes about 40 to 45 minutes. We cannot book flights for you.
